With the voting deadline less than a week away, we’ll be taking time this week to highlight the last (but not least) of the nonprofit finalists in our App Giveback contest. First up, Compass House and Investigative Post.

Compass House provides safe shelter and services to runaway, homeless, and at-risk local youth. Located at 370 Linwood Avenue in Buffalo, Compass House has been helping youth with shelter, hot meals, warm beds, and counseling since 1972, making it one of the nation’s oldest shelter and service providers for young men and women.

The National Runaway Switchboard estimates that within three days of being on the streets, a young person will resort to drugs, crime, or prostitution just to survive. Compass House helps youth ages 12-17, both male and female, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year to help provide them “A new direction for a better life.”

Compass House also has a Resource Center, located at 1451 Main Street in Buffalo, for youth ages 14-24 years old that are homeless or at risk of being homeless. Those who seek help from The Resource Center can receive case management; instruction on independent living skills; personal care supplies; food, cooking, and laundry facilities; and individual, group, and family counseling. All services are confidential and voluntary.

Investigative Post is an investigative reporting center, providing Buffalo and Western New York with investigative work where main news stations may not have the ability to do so due to cutbacks.

Investigative Post has a dual mission: to provide investigative reporting and analysis and develop young journalists, particularly those of color.

The organization publishes on its website, www.investigativepost.org, and partners with local news stations such as WGRZ, Artvoice, and WBFO, as well as with local journalism programs at St. Bonaventure University, UB, Medaille, Canisius College, and the WNY Service Learning Coalition.

Investigative Post is located at 392 Pearl Street in Buffalo.
