Companies everywhere are suddenly transforming their look, feel and values. How exactly are leaders motivating their employees? How are they humanizing their brands? Are those ping-pong tables and fancy chaise lounge chairs really all it takes?

Hint: It’s not just about the vibrant aesthetics and modish coffee stations.

According to Fortune, the best employers in the United States say their greatest tool is culture.

Company culture is defined as the personality of a company which includes a variety of elements, including work environment, company mission, value, ethics, expectations and goal.

Let’s take a look at how some of the top company cultures in the world are absolutely crushing it.


1. LinkedIn

LinkedIn, the social networking service for resumes, professionals and job seekers around the world, has grown with a total of 414 million users in 200 countries and territories. Needless to say, this company has it figured out. But what makes them stand apart from other social media companies?

2. Warby Parker

Warby Parker focuses on giving back. While selling glasses and prescriptions for only five years now, management came up with a plan to give a pair of glasses to someone in need each time a customer makes a purchase.

Sure, they have a stellar workspace or weekly luncheons held at the swanky headquarters located in New York City, but that’s not all that makes this company wonderful. Many brands have developed a culture crush on Warby Parker because of their employee-driven strategies and engagement enforcement. The company makes sure that there is always an upcoming event so the entire team has something to look forward to, along with implementing methods to make sure the entire team works well together.

For example, each committee that is part of the culture-SWAT team has their own vocation. The party committee, for example, organizes fun events for informative happy hours each week, while another committee focuses on the interview process and how they can develop relationships with new and current employees.

Each employee also gets the opportunity to expand their cultural horizons. On their second anniversary, Warby Parker payed to send them to one of their nonprofit partners in another country (like VisionSpring, located in India and El Salvador). Touché, Warby Parker.


3. Twitter

Twitter was ranked best company culturefrom Glassdoor back in 2014, and that victory is still ringing strong two years later. With over 320 million registered users from around the world, Twitter has gained popularity as it continues to expand into new territories.

Headquartered in San Francisco, Twitter’s main office is known for its stylish decor, fully stocked fridge and spacious employee cafeteria lounge. However, the fun aesthetics are not the only reason why the company’s culture is a success.

Twitter has developed a strategic plan to adapt its culture based on the wants and needs of its employees. Derived from management in order to help over 1,300 employees, the strategy included idea-generating surveys, encouraging feedback from all employee levels and creating an engineering exchange program with Etsy to share knowledge.

From its extensive research, Twitter implemented five core skills to convey the company’s culture to employees: communication, development, direction, change and collaboration. Twitter’s culture is best described by employees as collaborative, driven, and an environment with a world of opportunities. With its rooftop meetings, motivational team projects and happy-go-lucky employees, it’s no surprise  that Twitter’s culture is among the best.


4. Netflix

Netflix has grown into one of the most popular streaming businesses today. With currently 75 million subscribers and 42.5 billion streaming hours watched in 2015, it’s no wonder why consumers are now turning off cable and switching to this affordable alternative.

So, how does Netflix’s culture help employees gain so much success?

In August of 2009, Netflix’s CEO Reed Hastings created the Netflix Culture Deck, which resonated with all employees. The deck focused primarily on freedom and responsibility, letting each employee have his or her own process at work while having the freedom they need to explore and grow as a professional.

And lastly, the game changer: In August of 2015, the company rolled out a new initiative: unlimited vacation and parental leave.

This epic benefit not only lifts restrictions in the company, but also allows employees to take care of themselves without over-working, which is extremely frowned upon at Netflix.

“Employees at the Los Gatos, California-based streaming video giant know that they’re not being judged by how hard they appear to be working — long, grueling hours aren’t encouraged — but by how they produce,” Timothy Stenovec from The Huffington Post explains.
