This can last for years or, sometimes, an entire lifetime. Initially, brand loyalty can come across as a simple preference, but there’s actually a considerable amount of psychology behind why people choose and buy their preferred brands. Through a combination of consistent experiences, emotional connections, familiarity, personal identity, and psychological associations, people develop their own states for Coke instead of Pepsi, Nike over Adidas, and Ferrari in place of Lamborghini. As you can see, much goes into creating brand loyalty, and our latest blog goes in-depth on it.

Are You Feeling It?

One of the biggest factors that influences brand loyalty is emotion. People often don’t make purchasing decisions based on logic or practicality. Rather, their judgement on whether or not they buy a product can be impacted by how the ideas projected by that brand make them feel. Coca-Cola has a history of this, tying its brand with the values and ideas of celebrations, family, happiness, and friendship. This ad “Who Will You Share a Coke With?” is one of multiple that displays the association the brand employs of its products with positivity, sharing, and connection. When someone engages with a Coke product, they may reminisce about family gatherings or meaningful moments with close friends, making the brand and its product connected to more than just a bottle or can of Coke.

Keep On Going

Another important part of brand loyalty is consistency. When consumers have repeated positive experiences with a brand or one of their products, they begin knowing what to expect from it, triggering customer loyalty. This may extend to a brand’s logo, advertising, products, packaging, and general message. Instead of a consumer trying something new in the form of engaging with a competitor’s product, they instead may decide on choosing the brand or product they already trust. This builds long-term relationships and loyalty with the brand and its customers. For example, people may develop strong personal associations with car brands like Ferrari, making a specific make or model of one of their cars part of their identity because of a previous life experience. If they strongly associate with Ferrari, they may be inclined to only pursue and purchase their products.

It’s Who You Are

Identity can be another connection to a brand. Certain brands can represent or define specific lifestyles, characteristics, or values. Nike, for example, has built a strong identity around athleticism, motivation, determination, and achievement. A person who identities themselves as an athlete or dedicated to fitness or movement may feel that Nike represents who they are. Purchasing and wearing Nike can help them express that identity. In this way, consumers are not just always buying a product, but rather, buying an idea of who they are or who they want to become.

It’s a Habit

There’s also habit. When a person constantly buys from the same brand, the decision to purchase another product of theirs later in the future can become fully automatic. The consumer may not spend much time comparing products from different brands because they already know what they like and have developed their specific taste. The thought process can become almost nonexistent: think about people lining up every year for the latest Apple iPhones or MacBooks, for example. Even if a rival company like Samsung with their Android phones or Microsoft with their own personal computers releases a competing line of products, a brand loyalist may say “Apple is the brand I always buy,” and disregard the other companies. A consumer may not feel a compelling reason to switch brands. Familiarity and habit can be powerful influences on behavior and purchasing.

Two Great Examples

Nike and Coca-Cola are both great examples of brands that have successfully curated long-term loyalty with their respective customers. Both of them have maintained highly-recognizable identities while curating strong emotional associations with their products. Nike relays its brands to the messages of athletic achievement and motivation, while Coca-Cola connects with happiness, memorable experiences, and relationships. Although the products themselves are important, the psychological meanings attached to these brands can be just as vital in keeping customers loyal.

Ultimately, brand loyalty is about more than simply liking a product or company. People can become loyal to brands because of the memories, habits, identities, and emotions associated with them. Consistency allows consumers to foster trust while positive experiences encourage them to return. Over time, a brand can become part of someone’s lifestyle or personal identity. This helps explain why consumers remain committed and passionate to the same brands for years, even with countless available alternatives. In many cases, people are not simply choosing a product, but instead are selecting something that feels meaningful, familiar, and connected to who they are as both a person and an individual.

Reach Out

Contact us if you’re looking to build upon your brand.

We’re all loyal to a specific brand.
