We spoke with several local professionals who are members and leaders within local organizations and  outlined the various options to help you decide the best fit for you.

What is it?

BN360 aims to create an inclusive and collaborative network of resources that empower talented individuals to achieve their goals for professional growth and success. The three areas they focus on are networking, leadership development and community engagement. They provide information and resources that not only attract professionals, but also serve to retain those who are already working in the Buffalo area.

“BN360 targets young professionals in the Buffalo Niagara region in all industry sectors. The programming is aimed at those who are up-and-coming not only in their career but also through their involvement in the community. There is no age limit to those wanting to gain professional development and obtain a deeper understanding and connection with the community and how they can get involved.” -Liz Callahan, Workforce Development Manager says.

We bring in exciting topics that educate people on what we have in the Buffalo Niagara area and meet the people behind the region’s resurgence. You get to hear from the decision-makers and get the inside scoop in an intimate panel and Q&A format. My second is Happy Hour for a Cause; it’s our only pure networking event, but it also is a way for us to highlight and raise money for area nonprofits!”

What is it?

AAF Buffalo focuses on bringing together communications professional in Western New York. Its goal is to enhance the connections and industry knowledge of the advertising and marketing community through a focus on people’s passions, occupations and experience levels. The group fosters an environment that encourages collaboration, education, networking and social events for members.

As you could’ve guessed, this one’s probably our favorite.

ADDY’s, Best Places to Work and More: Here’s What We’ve Been Up To

March 2016 has been one eventful month for us Quinlanites. We were nominated as a finalist for Buffalo’s Best Places to Work, were married to our work at the American Advertising Awards and celebrated our 29th birthday.

Nothing beats company culture– and we’ll admit ours is a little weird.

For the first time ever, Quinlan was chosen as a finalist for the micro category  (10-24 employees) in Business First’s Best Places to Work for 2016. Why? Well, it probably has a little something to do with our intense guitar hero sessions during our Friday happy hours, in-house video series, anniversary excursions and monthly luncheons (some of us are top-of-the-line chefs).

All finalists were invited to the Best Places to Work luncheon on March 16 at Buffalo RiverWorks. But there was a catch: everyone had to come dressed as their favorite TV sitcom. Naturally, we took full advantage of this opportunity and transformed our agency into the cast from Saved by the Bell. We didn’t win best dressed, but that’s up for debate.

In order to qualify as a finalist, each employee was asked to take a survey about their workplace’s culture and asked to explain why the company stands out as a great place to work.

Here’s what a few people had to say about Quinlan:

Although we didn’t come out as winners for Best Places to Work micro category, we couldn’t be more proud of where we work (and we’re looking forward to giving it our best shot again next year).

Each year, all of the ad geeks in Buffalo get together to showcase their best work. On March 4, 2016, 10 of Quinlan’s finest rolled up to the Statler for the Buffalo’s American Advertising Awards, hosted by the Ad Club of Buffalo.

This year was one for the books: we went home with six awards, the most we’ve ever won. Allow us to take this moment for some humble brags:

 

Not only did we come away with six new shiny pieces of hardware, but Jillian Minderler, our own graphic designer and Ad Club of Buffalo Board member, received the Future Star Award for all of her hard work. So yes, things got a little rowdy.

We must give a special shout out to FARM for this year’s sponsorship. The creative theme, Married to your Work, featured a glamorous wedding cake, band that played memorable tunes and an evening dedicated to our love of advertising.

Quinlan Anniversary: We’re nearing the dirty 30

Twenty-nine years ago, Lawlor Quinlan left Faller, Klenk & Quinlan to start his own agency: Quinlan and Company. When Quinlan first opened its doors in March 1987, it was a traditional advertising agency built on a strong foundation of work-life balance.

Today, we still believe in those same founding values, but our capabilities have changed quite a bit. Although we haven’t forgotten about our traditional roots, our 20 employees are now skilled in video production, web development, content marketing, branding strategy and more.

To celebrate how far we’ve come, we did what any company would do: we shut down the office for three hours to play nine holes of mini golf at the Paddock Chevrolet Golf Dome. Shooter McGavin’s Kids, Who’s Your Caddy and Team Tiddlywinks gave it their best shots, but the Pile Drivers came away with first place. Don’t ask.

We all felt like winners, though, when the Golf Dome employees brought out a traditional Buffalo post-game feast: pizza, wings and salad. After we each chowed down several servings worth of food, we gathered around to listen to Gary Miller, our CEO, talk about the agency’s state.

“The Quinlan of today is a content driven, digitally focused agency that is ready to build,” Gary says. “With highly skilled staffers on board and more efficient processes in place to generate improved creative product that positively impacts our client’s bottom lines, we are well positioned for expansion in 2016.”

Companies everywhere are suddenly transforming their look, feel and values. How exactly are leaders motivating their employees? How are they humanizing their brands? Are those ping-pong tables and fancy chaise lounge chairs really all it takes?

Hint: It’s not just about the vibrant aesthetics and modish coffee stations.

According to Fortune, the best employers in the United States say their greatest tool is culture.

Company culture is defined as the personality of a company which includes a variety of elements, including work environment, company mission, value, ethics, expectations and goal.

Let’s take a look at how some of the top company cultures in the world are absolutely crushing it.

1. LinkedIn

LinkedIn, the social networking service for resumes, professionals and job seekers around the world, has grown with a total of 414 million users in 200 countries and territories. Needless to say, this company has it figured out. But what makes them stand apart from other social media companies?

2. Warby Parker

Warby Parker focuses on giving back. While selling glasses and prescriptions for only five years now, management came up with a plan to give a pair of glasses to someone in need each time a customer makes a purchase.

Sure, they have a stellar workspace or weekly luncheons held at the swanky headquarters located in New York City, but that’s not all that makes this company wonderful. Many brands have developed a culture crush on Warby Parker because of their employee-driven strategies and engagement enforcement. The company makes sure that there is always an upcoming event so the entire team has something to look forward to, along with implementing methods to make sure the entire team works well together.

For example, each committee that is part of the culture-SWAT team has their own vocation. The party committee, for example, organizes fun events for informative happy hours each week, while another committee focuses on the interview process and how they can develop relationships with new and current employees.

Each employee also gets the opportunity to expand their cultural horizons. On their second anniversary, Warby Parker payed to send them to one of their nonprofit partners in another country (like VisionSpring, located in India and El Salvador). Touché, Warby Parker.

3. Twitter

Twitter was ranked best company culturefrom Glassdoor back in 2014, and that victory is still ringing strong two years later. With over 320 million registered users from around the world, Twitter has gained popularity as it continues to expand into new territories.

Headquartered in San Francisco, Twitter’s main office is known for its stylish decor, fully stocked fridge and spacious employee cafeteria lounge. However, the fun aesthetics are not the only reason why the company’s culture is a success.

Twitter has developed a strategic plan to adapt its culture based on the wants and needs of its employees. Derived from management in order to help over 1,300 employees, the strategy included idea-generating surveys, encouraging feedback from all employee levels and creating an engineering exchange program with Etsy to share knowledge.

From its extensive research, Twitter implemented five core skills to convey the company’s culture to employees: communication, development, direction, change and collaboration. Twitter’s culture is best described by employees as collaborative, driven, and an environment with a world of opportunities. With its rooftop meetings, motivational team projects and happy-go-lucky employees, it’s no surprise  that Twitter’s culture is among the best.

4. Netflix

Netflix has grown into one of the most popular streaming businesses today. With currently 75 million subscribers and 42.5 billion streaming hours watched in 2015, it’s no wonder why consumers are now turning off cable and switching to this affordable alternative.

So, how does Netflix’s culture help employees gain so much success?

In August of 2009, Netflix’s CEO Reed Hastings created the Netflix Culture Deck, which resonated with all employees. The deck focused primarily on freedom and responsibility, letting each employee have his or her own process at work while having the freedom they need to explore and grow as a professional.

And lastly, the game changer: In August of 2015, the company rolled out a new initiative: unlimited vacation and parental leave.

This epic benefit not only lifts restrictions in the company, but also allows employees to take care of themselves without over-working, which is extremely frowned upon at Netflix.

“Employees at the Los Gatos, California-based streaming video giant know that they’re not being judged by how hard they appear to be working — long, grueling hours aren’t encouraged — but by how they produce,” Timothy Stenovec from The Huffington Post explains.

So let’s take a quick recap. These four companies are quite different, but have a few important things in common:

Employees are our most valuable assets. Give them the freedom and creativity they need to shine, and their work will help your productivity.

Companies with an adaptive culture that is aligned to their business goals will routinely outperform their competitors.

How to Be the Best-Dressed Employee in Any Office Setting

It’s an age-old question: Why can’t I wear my pajamas to work as long as I’m productive? The logic is tempting, yes, but that doesn’t mean your co-workers will appreciate your choice. We’ve all heard it’s important to dress the part for our jobs. But are we really doing it right?

Business wardrobe: Why does it matter?

It turns out that people really do judge a book by its cover. When people first see you, the first things they notice are your appearance– and it leaves an impression with them.

Social psychologists studying the impact of imagery have determined that 30 seconds is how long it takes for someone meeting you for the first time to form a whole laundry list of determinations about your character and abilities. If your clothing choices say you fit the part, you’ve already won half the battle.

“There was once a time when every professional, no matter his or her industry, put on a suit each morning,” Richard Feloni and Mike Nudelman from Business Insider explain, “But today, there are so many interpretations of formal and business casual that it can be easy to look sloppy or over-dressed if you’re not aware of the environment.”

Those of you who are not super fashion-savvy: staple items are the basic accessories within your wardrobe that help to create a completed, polished look.

That being said, they play a pretty big role in completing your outfit. Here are the items that any man or woman should have in their wardrobe, regardless of his or her office style.

One size does not fit all: Navigating your workplace culture

Not every office is the same. Just as not every job is the same, offices are dependent on the type of work they encompass. When trying to dress to impress in your office, it’s important to know which office setting you fit into.

According to CNN, financial services is one industry that places the most emphasis on professional work attire. Fifty-five percent of workers in this sector say well-dressed employees are more likely to be promoted than others. An additional 51 percent of sales representatives say the same thing about the likelihood of promotions in their industry.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, only 33 percent of manufacturing employers and 37 percent of IT employers say that professional attire influences whether or not an employee gets promoted.

To help you decipher the world of work clothes, we broke office environments down to three different categories:

Dressed to the Nines: Business Formal

Business formal is dressing to impress on a daily basis. Your clothing should be a suit or its equivalent. You’re probably attending meetings with clients or corporate bigwigs weekly, if not daily. It’s important to look (and act) the part.

This type of style doesn’t have to be boring, but it should be the most structured.

Gentleman: a well tailored suit is your best choice. Key to a good suit: perfect fit. If the suit looks sloppy, you might as well wear a sack (actually, please don’t do that. Choose a suit that fits and flatters your body).

Ladies: Don’t like suits? Try mixing pieces of your favorite suit with other tops and bottoms in your wardrobe. Using part of your piece will help to give your outfit a more professional look without having to wear the same old suit over and over again.

With so many retailers catering to women in the corporate world, wearing a suit to the office is not your only option,” fashion blogger Olivia Trewatha from Corporate Catwalk says. “I wear a classic suit to the office once a month…at the most. My curves and my height do not compliment a suit or should I say a suit does not compliment my curves and height. However, I do mix and match pieces from my suit collection. For example, I love my suit jacket with a peplum top or pencil skirt with a belted sweater.”

The Middle Man: Business Casual

Business casual dress is a more relaxed style than business formal. It doesn’t require you to wear a suit to work everyday, however the clothing choices are still what most people would consider to be professional.

While you’ll have opportunities to dress to impress in this setting, you won’t always have to. Occasionally a suit and tie will be your outfit of choice, but you’ll be able to get away with a more business casual look on most days. According to Renee Sylvestre-Williams, a contributor for Forbes, Business Casual means “ ‘Not jeans, but not a suit’ to ‘Nice blouse, pants, light jewellery. No suits, no t-shirts, certainly no jeans – even black ones, no logo wear.’ Others said, ‘In my previous jobs, everything had to be tucked in, no athletic clothes. Oh and if a boss said ‘you look casual,’ that was a hint to not wear the clothes again.’ There seemed to be agreement on: ‘For men: trousers/khakis and a shirt with a collar. For women: trousers/knee-length skirt and a blouse or shirt with a collar. No jeans. No athletic wear.’”

Polos and button downs will make up a majority of men’s closets in this category. The best way to dress up or add some pep to these outfits is by accessorizing correctly. Wearing a sweater or a great watch might be the perfect touch.

For women, dress pants and blouses are always an option, but dresses are much more fun (despite what the childhood version of yourself thought about them). Not only are dresses comfortable, but they are one article of clothing that acts as a whole outfit. For some added flair accessorize with a statement necklace on a plainer dress, or some rocking earrings on an exciting, patterned dress.

Relaxed but Classy: Casual

Casual is essentially mixing and matching your nice articles of clothing with pieces that are more dressed down. This could mean that you’re wearing jeans with a nice blouse or dress shirt — or vice versa, a casual button down with nice slacks. The idea behind this style is to look professional, but also allow yourself some comfort and personality.

“Generally speaking, casual dress code can be symbolic of a company’s attitude toward its employees,” fashion icon Lauren Conrad explains. “In a way, it’s a sign of respect and trust. Apple, Google, and Nike all have very casual, laid back dress codes. Formal dress doesn’t always mean success. That is not to say dressing like a slob is sanctioned casual work attire. Professionalism is still paramount. Make sure your ensembles are appropriate, modest, and always clean and put together.”

In order to dress in a relaxed fashion and still look good, the key is to know how to mix casual pieces without looking like you just rolled out of bed. By arriving to work in casual clothes that are still neat, pressed, and appropriate for the type of work you do, you can make sure that a casual dress code isn’t holding you back.

You may see some crazy things from the fashion world in there, but don’t be discouraged. Take the essence of the designs and styles, and try to mimic those in your outfit utilizing your staple pieces.
